You’ve got to draw two crocodiles. There are no other possibilities. I like the idea of a crocodile with its mouth opening, I don’t like the idea of the crocodile, which has its mouth closed. I don’t like a crocodile that’s got teeth. That’s a bad idea for a person’s face. And then I’d like a crocodile for the arms and the hands. So you’d get the right, correct facial features for both characters. But if I draw all four of them together, it starts to look like the same image at different speeds, because you’re drawing so many characters at one time, I think you’re going to make that face look like different things at different speeds of processing. It just gets more and more difficult.

I think of the drawing of a man as being like a drawing of a person. With that kind of drawing, you can start putting his head on a pillow instead of a pillow frame and you can do all kinds of things with it.
Do you think it’s possible to create a portrait that is not only as accurate as possible and even more authentic?
It’s a big question! There are a lot of different ways this can be done. I think what we’ve come to expect is the accuracy of an original photograph but then if we go and make things a bit modern, like having a little dot in the corner of a face, it’s like, what are we doing? The dot itself should not have teeth. I think the thing that people may get the most out of when they look at it is the beauty of the pose, the way it moves in such a way that one can go with it and draw their own version. You’ve got to try to come up with something that feels like you’re drawing. If you look at an original photograph of Marilyn Monroe, you’ll see a very clear example where every movement there is an expression.

Absolutely. When you look at the photographs that are in the museums now, it’s a much different image than it was 30 years ago. You’ll see a lot of different expressions. I think people are looking for more expression in their images for themselves because there is still a lot of work to be done in terms of photography. But I think as long as you can capture that
