I don’t know where the flappers got their idea of ’emasculated men’. Perhaps the image of them and the music of the 70’s seemed to reflect that?
Maybe because in the 70’s, the music of the 60’s and 70’s were also seen as being misogynistic.
But is this how they were portrayed?
It is impossible to know what the message of the flapper is. It simply was not part of their vocabulary.
But in their view they were a ‘sex positive’ movement?
Yes.
It sounds like the flappers are a ‘sex positive’ movement, and maybe because of that, many women didn’t take things too seriously.
The fact is, some women were very much not into this scene?
Yes, and I think that is a shame not only for them but for others, as well. Because you would hope that anyone from those days would have known the message of flapper music.
Why did the music become less sexual in the 70’s and 80’s?
I’ve had people tell me that the message of the music has not become more sexual, but rather that it has lessened, in some ways.
For example, you have a song in the 80’s called, ‘Get in the Box… It’s About Sex’. Is that about how many women you know who have lost their virginity due to sexual abuse?
Yeah, there are some very, very funny, witty and often very clever, lyrics in the song.
So some of the songs of the early 70’s were less sexual than the music of the 80’s?
I don’t know if it had decreased in any way; I couldn’t say.
What about the music of the 90s that was more sexual?
Well the music of the 90’s was about sex, but there was no message to it but more sexual lyrics. Now, the music of the 70’s were just as much about a sense of empowerment. And that was in the same vein as the flapper movement.
So it was not the culture of the music?
No, it wasn’t about sexuality. It was about empowerment.
So in the 1980’s, women felt empowered that they could do whatever they felt like?
