This was a pretty big question I got from a lot of people, and I think the majority (even though everyone has an opinion) felt that the easiest thing to learn would be guitar. That said, there are other interesting things that are often undervalued but actually quite important in the performance of an instrument, such as:
1) the ability to play with more control and more dynamics. I’ll just quote the title of another great article “How to Play a Guitar” written by Matt Kucharek and Mark Van de Graaff, and I really like it:
“The ability to move the body forward and upward, and to use the upper part of the body as the control surface on which to focus your attention and, simultaneously, generate rhythmic movement.”
2) playing with great patience, and playing the notes without ever straining. I’m not going to go so far as to mention how to do this, but in general we want our playing and playing skills to be smooth and in control, and we don’t want them to come at too high a tempo. One of the most important qualities in the art of playing music is the consistency of the notes, whether it’s a string quartet by Bach, a symphony by Mozart, or a slow-drumming group by Tchaikovsky.
3) being able to create a whole body of sound. This may be the most difficult thing to master, but is actually often the biggest source of fun and excitement when playing an instrument. We want the sounds we create to be able to fill the stage, and you can see it at play during any concert. The key to creating a sound you haven’t heard before is to have a very clear and consistent sense of what you’re creating, such as the notes being struck against each other. The easiest way to do this is to look at the notes you’ve just played with your head, like a tape measure, and make note of the number you touched. You can also make a quick calculation by placing a ruler up at one spot, and touching that point. Then simply put a note above the point and count down with it. This may feel quite awkward, but it can work well to help you understand and remember different kinds of sounds during learning. When someone is explaining how a scale should sound, they may also explain how a string is supposed to sound and then play a note of a scale that they never tried before. If you practice the scales you just learned, your
