My mother has a special skill, and she’s one of my closest friends. She makes me do the drawings, it’s weird to think I can do better. For me, drawing is something I can only learn through making it, and if I make a mistake, it’s not my fault because my mother says I’m a good person.
Have you ever started a book by drawing a map of the book? Because you could actually do that.
It’s something I wanted to do all along, but it never really happened because I’m always drawing from paper, which is boring. What I really wanted to do was to draw a map, so I just took lots of different things and tried to put them on the map. It was a fun time. There’s something a little bit sinister about the map. I really need to do it again, so my next project is to make it. I’m going to go back to school for art.
What is your favorite book you’ve ever made? And why?
I liked this book, but I don’t like children. I’m really fond of drawing adults, like Mr. Miyagi or Mr. Mosholu.
What’s your favorite cartoon to draw?
I love a lot of different cartoonists, not just Mr. Miyagi. One of my favorites — it’s always hard to pick one — my favorite one right now is the one where he’s just sitting on a bench and watching the people coming and going. I’ve also done stories about a lot of different animals. I like to draw people from different walks of life. That’s why I think I’m so good at the animals.
Any plans to start drawing comic books?
I’ve been doing this stuff for a long time. I just finished doing a book about the book industry called “Animated Fiction: From Big to Small” and it’s supposed to come out in July. I’ve also just started doing a cartoon about comics called “Movies for Fun & Profit” and that’s also going to come out. I’m also writing a book called “How to Draw Comics” and it’s about how one makes comics. I’m going to try to finish that as soon as I can.
