What are the most popular places to work?
I like to learn from people I respect, I think that’s a great quality in a manager. I think management should be people that respect their workforce. There should be people that are honest, and when it comes to people that you’re going to work hand-in-hand with, it’s not necessarily the best thing, but it’s a great thing in every way.
The best work I’ve been a part of was in a public company. If you look at corporate America, they just don’t like people who are good at what they do. I think you really can’t get more honest that with people you can actually build relationships with. I’ve worked at companies where I’ve been the one that brought in those people; it just wasn’t me that brought them in. It was the person that came to work. Then there are companies where the same manager might be the one that brought in somebody else.
You know, being able to do that, a good manager has to have the ability to just really listen and accept that they have to get through with it, that it’s not going to be a walk in the park. If it doesn’t work, they shouldn’t change or they need a new manager. I think you’ve got to work through some of those things.
Also, you have to be able to come up with great ideas. I think a great manager has the ability to come up with great ideas, and have a plan for them.
What are the challenges that come from working at a large company?
The challenges come from all different directions. At work you might be going out to eat with a group of your friends at your place in a beautiful downtown area, but if you’re not at those kinds of events, it can feel pretty empty.
With an organization like ours, if we’re not there when we’re supposed to be at those things, then it can really seem like all the good ideas are going to be wasted.
In addition to that, in a small company, you’ve got to manage to not get really bogged down in all the details. I don’t know what people would say about managing a large organization, but at the same time, I think being able to handle it, being a good leader, that can also be hard for people.
