The world’s largest car-making company will invest $400 million in a new plant in Fremont, California , making it a top-tier tech hub alongside Silicon Valley and the Bay Area.
The San Francisco-based company, Ford is expected to invest about $350 million for expansion at a new factory which employs about 1,000 workers. The plant will make the Mustang and Focus, as well as the X- and F-150 pickups, as well as other products under the Ford brand.
“Fremont is one of the fastest-growing communities in the United States, and it is home to one of the largest aerospace sectors in the country,” Bill Ford, Ford’s chairman and CEO, said during a press conference with local, state and federal officials at the new plant in Fremont on April 30.
“By creating a new production site, Ford will be able to bring more jobs to San Francisco and create new demand for Ford products in Silicon Valley.”
The state plans the investment in an area of the Bay Area with a fast-growing and highly educated workforce. But the area is also home to numerous startups and technology companies that attract a diverse class of entrepreneurs and talent with a range of skills and education. Ford says nearly 40 percent of the workers at its new production site are from those backgrounds.
Last year, Google announced a $100 million investment in Googleplex in Emeryville, California and another in Oakland. Facebook has invested roughly $400 million in its home town of Menlo Park, and Ford and other carmakers, including General Motors, have also increased investments in local communities over the last few years.
Ford expects to create over 10,000 jobs during that time period. And while the company says the first phase of this investment is focused on making the Mustang and Focus cars, it is also exploring other vehicles in the coming years.
