One aspect that is very clear with hip hop music is the genre has a lot of social components. Hip hop music allows artists to express themselves, to express themselves as individuals. It’s just as much about the music as it is about what is being said. Hip hop is a place where people can be themselves. There is no pretentiousness, no ego, absolutely no expectations. It’s just that people can express themselves through their music. And, the way that’s being played, it feels in that way as if it’s meant to be heard by the whole world. So that’s what Hip Hop has created which I think it’s very interesting. It’s a place where you have this universal language, you cannot get to that at home at home. It feels like you’re speaking to millions and millions of people. That’s the most important aspect.
And it’s important to understand what your language is. If you don’t speak that language, what do you think is wrong with you?
That’s a really good question. I think because, and I don’t know if it’s just a conscious decision, but the fact that music makes people feel comfortable, allows them to express their feelings, allows them to express their ideas, their dreams, and I think that’s really important. I want people to have a safe, happy, open, honest way to talk to each other. I’m just trying to get to where it’s just as simple and just as normal for you to say, “I have a bad day, I need to get away from it,” as it is to say, “I need to stay with my friends, watch TV, and have a good night sleep.” Maybe that makes it easier for you to talk to somebody who’s not there. I think that’s the fundamental thing that’s happened; people are more comfortable in the moment. If you’re having a bad day, there’s a safe place where you can talk to somebody and just talk as if you’re having a bad day.
Has it helped for your career that this is a genre that feels a lot like “home”?
A lot of it, but there are also some people who don’t feel like they fit in at home. And I feel like I need to do what I can to be the good person for that person, so I can really grow and find my identity as a human being. If I can come together, work in harmony and not get in each other’s way, then
