It’s not just about the choreography, it’s about the people, it’s about the energy, it’s about the atmosphere. It can be so empowering to take something into your body and be comfortable with it. The dancing itself is the whole point. It’s like a lot of people don’t really understand dance, I always tell people—we all go through the same motions, but they’re just not able to relate them to their own bodies because of our bodies and our clothing. The body is like one big thing. We’re not making a point that there is a “right way” to dance. The dance is what makes us a thing. It’s what’s powerful and what’s beautiful and what makes us feel good, and we shouldn’t ever be judged by what we do or don’t do.
How did the “dance revolution” begin?
We’ve been working on this since the beginning of the movement, so it’s been very much evolving. I would never say it’s a revolution—it’s a revolution in the way that we live, and we need to be able to move our bodies freely to express our feelings. The reason I get angry about hip-hop doesn’t just have to do with the music. The world itself is changing. When I look at the way men and women dress in the United States, I go, ‘Oh, they’re all making money off people who just walk their dogs.’ It’s a weird world out there. Hip-hop is the main reason that people are able to be able to do that. The next big thing is going to come. The world is changing. And one day, in 20 years, I’m not sure where that culture is going to end up. It’s going to be a different society. It’s not going to be like now, where kids are sitting at home, just getting drunk with their own kind. It’s going to be different. It’s going to be like the old days.
You’re very much an outsider to American hip-hop culture. How has your experience in that culture affected how you see dance?
The world is changing. I feel like I’m a very old and conservative person—I don’t want to live in a world that has no boundaries. I don’t want to see the changes. If you come into that world and you say, “Wow, it’s really different from here”, I would be like, “Why don’t you want to live here
