It is not necessarily just the dance itself that is influenced by the local culture. There are many customs that were adopted out of the local culture and incorporated into folk dance, particularly within the Scottish culture. A good example of this is the use of the word ‘candy’ as a verb. Traditionally, you would have to get a sugar cane to be called a ‘candy’, however, over the centuries, this was changed to “candy” as a verb.
An example of customs not inherited from the local culture is the use of the word ‘fairy’ when speaking to a girl. This is not a word that was associated with the local culture, but simply a term for females.
What is the difference between a folk dance and a traditional dance?
A folk dance is a formal event with a well-oiled system that is designed for an audience – such as a wedding, a family get-together or an Easter celebrations.
As a part of the Scottish Highland Games, a traditional folk dance could involve a performance of an old song, dance, dance number or song from an old folk song.
In other words, such a performance is based on the Scottish tradition and can be a good example of how to incorporate the traditional elements of Scottish culture into your music.
On the other hand, you would not be able to have a traditional Scottish dance as a part of a folk dance.
In other words, you could have a folk dance where you dance a few standard steps or a traditional dance where you dance an old song before a large audience.
