You are not alone. A survey released this month by the American Bible Society (ABS) reveals that only 11% of Americans are sure that there is room for Christians to become alcoholics. This number is more than four times higher than it was when the group first polled on the topic in 2001.
“I would not be surprised if many of these evangelical Christians are not thinking about abstinence to the same extent as people with other religions,” said Scott Campbell, ABS President and CEO.
More and more churches are starting their own Bible Study groups – some as small as five to six members – and these groups can be a great place to get started and continue to build their own relationships with the Lord.
“People may not have had much time before their pastor or a lay member taught them about alcohol consumption and their relationship with alcohol,” said Dr. Peter Breggin, director of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Programs at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
The most significant aspect of Bible Study in a religion, Breggin explains, is the sharing of biblical study material and the sharing of a belief in God’s plan for their lives; an important component that can help a church develop healthy relationships with alcohol with the help of an alcoholic.
“If you think about what alcoholism means to the Christian faith, and the way that Christians have always dealt with it, then you can probably relate to how an alcoholic might deal with some of the things that have gone on in the Christian family,” explained Breggin.
But while Bible Study can be an effective way for Christians to be honest about their values and beliefs, some of them are having difficulty finding a congregation that will be supportive. In the United States, only 25 church groups meet on Sundays, though as many as 75% do.
“Our hope is that people come together for Bible study because it is not their church life to go to church,” said Smith, the ABS leader.
What should you do if you suspect you may be a Christian drinking alcohol?
It is important to realize that the decision whether or not to drink alcohol depends on a person’s faith and attitude toward it. When confronted with a Bible study group who are not interested in the content of the Bible – such as a church that is a religious cult – it can be hard to understand the point of the Bible or how they believe it should be used.
