The first time I ever ran around the parking lot of Red Bull North American headquarters I wanted to scream. It was October 20, 1995, and I was 14 years old and riding a four-wheel-drive bike just south of the tracks.
The bike’s engine and suspension were still new, and I had no idea how to drive the bike on a real road — not to mention all the other drivers and spectators. I was excited to finally be running free when I pulled into the entrance of Red Bull North American headquarters at Lake Avenue and East 19th Street in Manhattan.
Red Bull founder Dieter Zetsche (above) had just arrived from Germany and was setting up his offices, so it was obvious I was the only white boy there. “Hey, you gonna drive it outta here like I asked?” he barked. I felt the urge to throw my bike at him. I didn’t.
“See, you get used to it,” he told me. He was a huge, burly man, 6’5″ and 230 pounds, wearing all black from head to toe. He was a very funny person. “Sometimes when people don’t know what to think of you, they just throw their fists at you. That’s what happened a few weeks after I got here, and I got in trouble. No offense.”
As soon as I got my license plate number, I knew my new career was on. On Dec. 1, 1999, I became one of the first foreigners to drive a Red Bull Monster Energy Superstock bike — a race car that runs for about 30 minutes with a total of three laps.
I was a teenager who took an English-speaking class at high school to learn English. But my new, professional life was in the future — with Red Bull.
