The first thing you need to do is figure out what you like doing in the first place. When you think about it, most people don’t like their favorite medium of drawing. So, if you are not attracted to drawing in the traditional sense, then you have to find a way to draw what you like. The trick is to be realistic! If you look at any drawing that uses any realistic techniques, there are just so many mistakes. This is true for many things that are drawn by beginners. I’m going to explain the basic principles of drawing a realistic character.
The First Character Design Rule
It’s always important to have a first character design! Don’t just assume you are going to have multiple character designs of the same character. It just doesn’t work. Having one main character is also a bad idea for beginners. You want something that you are really confident with. If that character design has a problem, things will take much longer and you wouldn’t have the time to try lots. For each character design, start off with a basic concept. It can be something big, something small, or something that is simply a sketch in the air. This idea will develop over the many many pages you have to draw. Don’t be scared to take your time to do as many drawings as you can!
Basic Characters
I want to introduce a simple, yet easy way to create basic characters. First draw out a rough sketch or sketchpad. For small sketches, it’s okay to put in some background as well. Just make sure you do your best not to make any mistakes. At this point, you can go to the illustration program of your choice and create a simple image. In Photoshop, it’s usually called a “drawing,” although a “drawing with brush” is a completely different art. It’s important that your image is something you can see. Once your image is completed, go back and make additional details. Use an empty panel in Photoshop, for example, to add further detail so that every person on the page clearly becomes recognizable. This is important to keep it consistent across the pages. Remember that no matter how detailed your image becomes, you want it to be easy for people to identify each character. The most important feature that I think all of us are looking for is a simple, consistent silhouette.
Making the first drawings
Now that you’ve made your sketch drawing, it’s going to become very important to get started, and keep at it. The
