How a parent draws a truck for the kids?”
In a recent interview with NBC News, the mother of two young girls described drawing her daughters. “When I drew them, they just had so much energy and love,” she said of her two girls, two and seven—the girls who love to race, play, and do anything. The parents of the two girls said they had been drawing them their entire lives, but they are still shocked to realize that their children look more like them than they look like me.
I was also struck by the fact that the mother of one of the girls described drawing her daughter’s face on the back of the truck as she drives away—a little like a sticker, but with added realism. She also drew her son’s face on the back of the truck; then, when they left, the father pulled an image of his own, to show the younger children how their mother had taken over her favorite hobby. It was very comforting for all of us to know that this was a family with such great respect and affection for one another.
I’ve been asked how my husband thinks our family and their children look. He was not impressed with our girls nor with my sons, but he could not possibly see that we had taken a step to take over our lives. I was thinking, “It’s hard to imagine,” but one day I came across a link to this article, which showed one woman using a carton as her drawing station for a new child. Her drawing table was decorated with her own children’s stickers—from pink cars and princess hats to orange ducks and pink elephants.
I went to that carton drawing station because I wanted to encourage my own children to see how many possibilities there are—and how we are all able to do whatever it is that we love and to do whatever it is that we want to do. It’s not so long ago when we had very little interest in any activity except watching the weather and shopping. But the more kids I see draw, the more they’re able to express themselves and create what they want with their very own hands.
I recently got a call from my husband calling to tell me that I was one of the people who had come up with a new idea for a family-friendly theme park. I’m very proud of my family for the way that they’ve changed my view on what it means to take care of one another. It’s not all that many years into our marriage. I’m sure we
