Does the hair feel real?
It’s like painting your whole face.
When do you get started?
I start the project from the very beginning as soon as I get back from work. I’ll work for five to six or eight hours.
Is the hair always in character?
Yes, everything is totally real.
Do you like doing it?
Yes, I get so excited when I finish. You just start all over again. It’s been so liberating.
How do you like drawing the hair on actors like Ryan Gosling?
It’s very different; I’ve never done anything like that. He’s very smooth, and the hair feels natural and beautiful to me.
What makes the hairs unique?
They’re like you’ve drawn a picture — it’s a piece of art that just happens to be in front of you.
Do you get involved in the design?
Sometimes the hair will be the first thing to go in a design. It takes time.
What made you want to become a professional artist?
I wasn’t good at drawing so I tried my hand at writing. I had been doing some video games for a few years when I started working on movies, so it wasn’t really that long. And I was lucky, because in the very beginning I was a graphic designer at Disney and I had an amazing supervisor who allowed me free rein to make as many movies as possible. Then I moved onto directing on TV — one of my first movies was “The Good Wife” and then “Smallville” — and that was a great introduction. I just never saw my career coming to an end.
How did you learn your craft?
I was taking classes in painting and drawing, but I didn’t really understand what was going on. I didn’t know what was going on. It was a great learning process. But I also always wanted to be in movies. The more you have an idea before you go into a film, the better.
Can you tell me about your process for coloring hair?
