A: You try not to look like someone who’s an object. I tried to think about my wardrobe for four years, to be authentic, and then I started wearing more vintage and then the 1920s, which I feel was my calling, my style. I feel like it’s the most authentic style I’ve ever been in, and I look so much like a Victorian. I don’t feel like a 1930s dress.
Q: Are you a fan of the movie “A Day at the Races” ?
A: I wasn’t a big fan. They tried, they said they should do the movie, but I’ve never seen it … It sounded like a good movie to me, it’s just not my thing. The story of how they get that car is really cool, but it really felt like they really wanted to do something like “A Day at the Races,” and I like that movie, but I just think, “You know what? You can’t have both.” (pause) Don’t get me started about the movie.
On why she decided to go back into the archives
I would have never had the opportunity to do this if it wasn’t for my husband. And this is a great way to honor my husband when he passed away. So we started the project.
I actually had written a song about it as soon as I realized I had the chance to do it, so we recorded the song “Lucky Me” as soon as we began. I always think of how I was in the archives. I have the collection — I didn’t start doing this until 2009, before “Lucky Me” was done. We decided that it was time to do something. I know that when I was 17, I had a couple of albums, but it took me a little time. We did it on my own time for about four years and then I was like, “Oh, this is what I’m going to do at this point. This is how I’m going to get more into my career.” And I’m grateful for that.
My favorite album from I think it was “Velvet Underground” is by Frank Sinatra, but “A Day at the Races” is “A Day at the Races”. But the album I love from “Velvet Underground” is “Loud as a Brick”, by The Beatles. To me, that collection is the best. It’s a record that you can’t get any less than on a vinyl
