The official release of Ubuntu 13.10 just came out, but there is an interesting news about it. The Ubuntu 12.04 LTS desktop will finally leave the hands of everyone in September, when Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will be released on February 22, 2016.

While we are not sure how much that change from 2012 will actually impact Ubuntu, the fact is that it will end the Ubuntu 13.10 cycle and move to the release of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. With the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS moving to Ubuntu 14.04 (Yosemite) in December 2016, the end of the 12.04 cycle seems as inevitable to some as reaching 100,000 downloads on Ubuntu 13.10.

The release of Ubuntu 12.10 on April 28th, 2011 was considered an important milestone for the Ubuntu project. In fact, in the days before that release there were no plans to end the 12.04 cycle, and some people even considered it a good idea to continue the 12.04 series.

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS had been delayed for nearly two years. However, Canonical announced that Ubuntu 14.04 would be released as early as March 8th, 2014.

The full list of changes and bugfixes for the official upgrade are available in the official Ubuntu 14.04 LTS changelog.

For users who might have been holding out for long, the upgrade might be a little painful. The next edition of Ubuntu (14.10) will be available in the middle of February.

Ubuntu is one of the few mainstream operating systems that is still supported by Canonical. It also manages to keep its stable release system by maintaining a single, supported version for all computers in every country.

In addition, Ubuntu is also responsible for several open source projects, including the Ubuntu Software Center (Ub
