This study examined the effects of anabolic resistance training (AR) on physical fitness (PE) variables in overweight, sedentary persons (≥40 kg). We tested two protocols of AR (2–4 wk, each with a 6-wk washout: AR1 and AR2). AR1 was an acute protocol of 2 wk volume-based, volume-equivalents of 3–4 sets on three of the 4 exercises used in this study. AR2 consisted of 4 wk of a 5-wk washout from resistance training that did not include any of the exercises used in AR1, and consisted of the same 3–4 sets as AR1. Both protocols were conducted under controlled conditions of varying intensities (70–80% 1 RM maximum) of 25–35 % 1 RM for one exercise/set. The study was completed in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. All study procedures were approved by the institutional Review Board (IRB), the Institutional Review Board (I-8-I-10-04-1), and the Institutional Review Board (I-8-I-10-04-2). The study participants were between 20 and 55 yr old, were sedentary but not obese, and, while not active sports, were trained in aerobic exercise of some kind.
