We were all looking forward to The Witcher 3 during its E3 2013 reveal, but some are questioning whether it can live up to its promise of becoming an open world RPG.
While many praised the game’s excellent combat system (and the way its Geralt, a Witcher-like character, interacts with the world), some have pointed out that some areas of the game appear empty or barren. In the comments section of a review by Eurogamer, user Vannin1 points out that a new quest that was introduced at E3, The Red Viper, is very sparse and empty.
While Vannin is not suggesting that the quest is a hoax, he explains himself as having played The Witcher 3 twice on PC and the game was very, very empty.
I played Skyrim on Xbox 360 for a week, playing the story missions, not the main story. When it came out on PC (after a quick download), it was the opposite. The areas I saw were huge, the quests, well, they were pretty simple and boring. While I liked Bethesda’s previous Skyrim games, this wasn’t what they had promised. (In the Witcher’s case, I wanted it bigger – a lot bigger – than its predecessor, The Witcher 2.)
Some have wondered why you don’t see any quest from Geralt, despite him being an important character in the story and being the protagonist. It appears that the developer is still deciding what his role will be in the game, however, and may or may not introduce an NPC Geralt with an active role. We may never know this for sure, as the game is still in development and could very well change, but we still have no idea whatsoever.
In addition, some players have complained that the game does lack variety, saying that they are having a hard time unlocking each of the Witcher’s abilities. Some have suggested that the open world is too hard to explore, but it remains to be seen whether or not The Witcher 3 can be as challenging for people who do not have a lot of time to play the game.
The Witcher 3 is expected to be released in 2014 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Windows PC.
