I learned how to play the ukulele from my dad when I was little. But I also learned how to play the guitar at the same time. If you study the ukulele, it will seem easy, but practicing can really make it into something you’re proud of. As a beginner ukuleller, you don’t really get much practice, only when you’re ready to start your own band. It’s really hard to learn the guitar unless you learn to play. Even when you practice playing with a guitar, you have to do it over and over again, to be proficient. On the ukulele, there’s no guitar. There’s just one tuning key and you just hold a note. You hold the ukulele, play the note and hold it and play it… It’s fun to play. It’s pretty amazing.
How long have you been practicing for the ukulele?
I only picked-up the ukulele in the summer of 1998. I’ve been practicing for that long but the ukulele has been very challenging. It’s the hardest ukulele I’ve learned!
What’s your favorite ukulele tune?
I can play practically any ukulele tune. It’s very subjective, but I like the first tune I played, “Pineapple Pie,” a song from the movie “Pineapple Express” by the U2. (laughs)
How has ukulele performance changed since you started playing it?
I don’t know if there’s such a thing as a “good ukulele” anymore. But I just feel different. Every day, I play a new chord and feel different about every chord. Every chord feels different from the day before. There’s always something new and unexpected that comes up that I’ve never known before.
Who’s your favorite ukulele teacher?
Oh, there are too many. That’s the question: There are too many people who just play the ukulele and then don’t really practice it enough. There are too many teachers who are not really teaching it. But I don’t know… That’s the difficult question. It’s really hard to find the right person. Some instructors just come and play the ukulele with you and say, “I feel inspired” or “I really feel like learning the ukulele. You really have a
