If you’re worried about that new computer that will replace your smartphone, you might also be worried about its security settings and features. And even if you don’t mind your mobile devices being hacked, that can be a problem with the newest iPhones, iPads, and Windows Phones. The latest version of Apple’s mobile OS, iOS, comes with a set of settings and features that make it much easier for hackers to gain access into your computer. The most recent release of the operating system introduces a new “Passcode Lock” feature: If you have your passcode with you, a hacker will only have to enter it when they wish to gain access to your system. This features, along with others, are part of Apple’s “Continuity” interface, which has also been implemented in iOS to secure email, text messages, calendars, call history, and more. Apple’s ‘Passcode Lock’ feature allows you to lock your iPhone so only your family members can unlock it, making it impossible for others to access your personal information.
According to Apple, not only do users have to input the correct passcode to unlock their iPhone, but they also have to hold it down while they’re unlocking it, so their passcode can be activated after their passcode has been confirmed. Additionally, the feature locks the device for 10 minutes after the passcode is entered. Apple also offers two additional options that can be switched on or off, but which are unlikely to be implemented on a daily basis. For iCloud Backup, users have to give up their iCloud username and password as a security measure. For Messages, both your iPhone’s message ID and password have to be changed in order for a hacker to retrieve messages. Both are designed to improve Apple’s security. According to CNET’s John Gruber, there are also privacy implications with iCloud’s feature and that means that it needs to be protected. By default
