In general, no – you have to be comfortable with some kind of control mechanism such as pedals, strings, or buttons. There are a lot of different ways to handle the controls; you’ll probably spend some time getting used to a new set-up. At the same time, any music education is important and you will definitely gain a lot from practicing your ukes, especially if you pick ukuleles that are different than your other instruments. Also, the ukes you pick will probably be much less expensive and, if you are really determined, you can try a new set-up (and spend money) and the rest will fall into place.
What’s the difference between the different types of ukes you can buy?
The uke1.0 is the basic model that many guitarists have to buy (but don’t have to live with). It’s a very common starting ukulele that’s great for beginning players because it’s light, affordable and easy to learn. It’s made for playing and, for beginners, it’s a solid foundation. It comes with a plastic pick-up-bridge which can be taken apart and replaced if needed. The uke is a nice size from 0.63″ (18 mm) to 0.78″ (20 mm), depending on the model (see diagram below). The uke1.0 is the same material as a violin, but the strings are made of high-quality nylon and there isn’t any plastic around it. It has a simple but solid construction, it weighs just over 0.6 ounces (20 g), and it makes for a very playable ukulele. It’s generally preferred by beginners because the plastic is so sturdy, and it can be easily cleaned.
The uke2.0 is a more complex model and it’s ideal for advanced players because it’s extremely durable and it’s a bit heavier but just as good for beginners, and it’s a little heavier than the uke1.0. It’s also very easy to play. It’s slightly thicker on the bridge and its strings are made of slightly stiffer materials. It’s a little bulkier than the uke1.0 but because the stringing has been stiffened in place of the plastic, it’s much easier to play because it doesn’t rub and rub under heavy use. The uke2.0 is heavier since the plastic strings require more mass
