Which instruments are hardest to learn?

Most of the things you do that you love, it’s all pretty basic. You can learn them in a day. There’s no new stuff because you’re learning the basics. But it can be really hard. I used to be a dancer. I used to do the hip hop and R&B thing when I was a little kid. That was really exciting to me when I was a little kid, but I was like, “I don’t know what I’m going to do. I always think for the big screen, and you’ll have to learn the stuff to be accepted.”

What’s that like to learn all these different instruments when you’re young?

Well, I would never say I don’t like it. I like playing a lot of different instruments. It makes you stand out, you know what I mean? I’m trying to get attention and get noticed. People like to be the new kid, so they put up their best stuff to show people that they can put their best stuff out. So, you can say I love playing the piano or the saxophone, and that sounds really good!

Are you proud of what you play?

I can’t really say. I don’t know if I’m proud of it, really. I don’t really have any good definition in my mind. I guess I don’t have one yet. There are some that I really want and love, and it’s some that I really think I should leave behind. I don’t necessarily feel like I have a strong relationship with any one. I’ve had some really amazing performances where, no matter what I do, I’m never gonna be that performer again. I would be a total waste. So, I just sort of keep it all in perspective.

Is that one thing that you always use in your mind that you’re going to find a way to be that good when you’re old?

I don’t think of my music as something that I’ll find and work at until 20. It never does! At the same time, I guess it could go in that direction, but I haven’t done it yet. Maybe it would be something I would do after I’m dead, or something like that.

I know you have a band that’s been working on music together. They played the festival, and they really looked sharp with what they had to play. You had the bass, guitar and drums, which were all things that you hadn’t played before.
