How is that going?
The Rangers have three months to decide who will succeed Fator as an elite goaltender, starting this season.
Will they hire a longtime NHL goaltender for $2 million?
Or will they give a shot to a 19-year-old netminder?
That’s the key question. In an area where the NHL salary has grown steadily, the Rangers are getting better and better.
“We’d like to have a top-class goaltender this year,” said general manager Glen Sather. “When our players are given that responsibility, we’d like to have them go out and make a name for themselves.”
Fator, who grew up in Edmonton, is not a rookie. He went to training camp with the Rangers as an apprentice goaltender.
He made the American Hockey League team in Hartford in 2009-10 with the Hartford Wolf Pack.
A year later as a 22-year-old, while the Rangers were a good, and close, second-division team, he spent the 2012-13 season with the AHL team in St. John’s.
It had been 13 years since a goaltender had the chance to start with the big club.
Fator, who plays as a left-winger, is still working on adapting to the higher levels of action.
“I am a little rusty,” Fator said. “But as I prepare for the next season, I expect to keep improving every day.”
He is 5-2-2.
Fator was asked whether he would prefer a regular paycheck over the $2 million a second year.
“No, maybe,” he said.
It took Fator four games to get into the lineup, on Dec. 2 vs. Carolina. But he was in and out of the lineup until Dec. 9 at Detroit on a line with Tanner Glass and Shane Harper.
He started eight of the next 11 games, went 13-5-5, and was named AHL playoff player of the month.
Then the Rangers went on the road for six games, with Fator starting five.
