I think that’s the most effective way to think about this. If it’s simple, you can work at it, and if it’s complex, there are only a few techniques that you can learn and that are effective. You can learn how to draw an arm. You can learn how to draw a face. You don’t learn how to draw an arm. You don’t teach someone how to draw an arm when they might not have the body to do so, or they know how to draw something like a shoulder but not a wrist, it’s not that. That’s the biggest thing. I don’t think if you’re going to just learn how to draw an arm by itself, you won’t be able to create a successful tattoo because you haven’t mastered how to create art. The way I look at them is you learn how to look up and down like every other artist. You learn to do a lot of things. Some people learn to draw like crazy in order to achieve their goal. I think you’re probably better off picking up a pencil and paper, and creating your own art. You learn how to draw a lot of things and get to learn how to draw all different kinds of tattoos and all different styles of art. That’s the best way for everyone.
How does being in tattoo school affect your artistry and process of creation?
At least a couple of artists that are in the business of painting a certain style of art have gotten into the business of tattooing, and some have tried to draw a tattoo but haven’t made it very well. Even if you get it good, you might find yourself struggling to get it perfect because you didn’t make a good study of certain techniques. Then again, it could be that your style of writing is so different from others that you end up being challenged by how you are approaching a tattoo. As an illustrator, I’m always looking for ways to make my drawings more interesting and expressive. There are several techniques in the art of tattoo drawing that you can use and try, but a great many of them depend on the way your body is designed from the inside out. You have to see your body from every angle or you won’t see the world for what it is. You have to look at it from every angle from every angle.
How do you see the artistic and cultural landscape of the community you’ve come from evolving?
I think it changes. I think that
