Canvas painting is very challenging as if you want to do it right you need to work all over, this is a very good reason to learn how to use Photoshop and to be able to work in layers.
Step 1. Choose your area of the canvas and get into the basics. You need to look at the first layer on your screen. I use the layer tool and highlight my area with a radial gradient, this will help me understand what I need to do.
Step 2. Now let me draw the lines. This is pretty easy and I prefer to do it with the pencil but you can also paint using the pencil and then draw the lines with the brush.
Step 3. You will have to use a brush with a higher range than normal. Usually my brush has a range of 8-12 lines; however, if you do not have a range that works for you, you can draw it with a brush that has a range of 16-32 lines. This may seem strange but as they say, it’s just the way it works.
Step 4. Then draw your final shapes. Again, I prefer to use the pencil but if you have a brush with a higher range you can get into the lines with a paintbrush. Just keep in mind that if the area you’re drawing is too close to the background (and I hope you are not drawing the background!) your final shapes will look very poor and you need to work on this with your brush.
Step 5. Now I need to add some texture to my work and that’s where my filter comes in. Using a Filter is very very simple and if you want to really understand it well you should have a look at my tutorial.
Step 6. I use the layer tool to add some texture to the first shape then repeat that with the next shape.
Step 7. I don’t like to make too big a shape at the end. My brush does not have a maximum range however I will add a gradient from black to white over that shape.
Step 8. Repeat this exercise with all your shapes.
How long do you practice your brush strokes? This question should be answered by a tutorial or some tutorial and it depends on how much your brush skills have progressed. My brush has gotten better and better since I started practicing in 2013, but sometimes I still get stuck in the beginner mode and end up getting lost. It’s a process which takes time.
