A: Yes. My teacher is the world class sketchbook maker, David Ellington, who lives in California. He’s currently on a “teaching the craft” hiatus due to health reasons but is set to return in 2017. We live in the San Francisco Bay Area, so it’s easy to go and talk to him, so I can do whatever I like with my sketches. I’m not quite sure I’m good enough yet to be able to sit down and sit back and draw like he can. His work is also gorgeous.
B: You can’t. Your drawings are just like a painting.
A: Oh god no. I have no idea how to draw. You can’t take the time and effort to figure it out.
How about photography and video?
A: The other thing I do in San Francisco is work for the online video platform, The Onion, as an intern on the front page design team, working on their online videos. I spend a lot of my time in the editing suite, making things that look good. That’s like my “sketchbook”. The videos I work on are in the Onion’s video library and I also do art direction work for them in the style of David Ellington, a guy I once interviewed who did all the video work.
B: I’ve always wanted to watch a video.
A: The more I think about it, the scarier my sketchbook gets. You’re just supposed to be happy or happy to be happy, but it’s a mess, really. If it happened to you, I can sympathize. It would be like a giant accident and you need somebody to put it together for you. That’s how I feel about doing my own projects. I just need a pencil and a picture that I can stick onto a piece of paper.
What projects are you working on these days?
A: I did a lot of art direction and design before I was like a professional comic artist, so I tend to be pretty reactive from my sketchbook. Now, my work is actually mostly in my free time. I’m also getting a degree in art history so I can be better at that stuff that comes my way.
B: We need the background more, too. I did one of your comics in art college and it was a super dark scene and it was just me and a little girl in the bathroom, the door open, the mirror…
