What do you think about the fact that the United States is one of the major consumers of fossil fuels? It is true that over the last century we have burned more fossil fuels than Germany used in all of World War II. If we were to use all of the available nuclear energy today we would still run out of oil in less than a year. Even if we were to burn all of the U.S. energy stocks today we would still have more energy than there is in all the world’s reserves of natural gas. If we really wanted to do something meaningful, we could actually reverse such a trend.
That is why the European Union requires all of its member nations to reduce their use of oil and gas. The U.S. government and the media have been saying for the past decade that the world must reduce its use of oil and gas. At a public symposium of the United Nations Energy Agency, U.S. Undersecretary of Energy Lisa Jackson said, “Let’s be honest, the planet will run out of oil in less than a decade.” The media reported that she said this at the UN conference last week.
What did Jackson say? She said, “We will get there without getting there any faster. The world is not about the technology but it’s about the commitment of all parties.” Jackson was talking about the international consensus that the earth’s reserves of natural gas must be reduced.
We have already discovered vast reserves of gas. If all of the U.S. reserves of gas were depleted, it would be a miracle! They are found all over the world. When they are depleted, no country can afford to exploit them. Russia, China and India can afford to exploit them. They have the reserves of their own nations. But we have no reserves of gas. We must take every effort to reduce our use of petroleum and gas. There are few resources so valuable for our life as a society as petroleum and gas.
Our energy problem is that we want to produce more oil and gas than we have in our hands. We can do this only if Americans recognize the need to reduce their use of petroleum and gas as quickly
