Cape Town – SA Rugby has identified a player to fill the gap left by the absence of the suspended Ben Smith, saying the prop has been suspended on the basis of his “serious infringements” and that he will undergo the disciplinary process if his role in a “disgraceful incident” is confirmed.

Smith, 19, faces a hearing on Friday by the SA Rugby Disciplinary Panel that will determine his standing in the organisation. His two-match ban for assaulting an official and striking an opponent at Suncorp Stadium on February 23 is the result of his involvement in what was a “disgraceful incident” during the Rugby Championship match against the Vodacom Lions where he was charged with dangerous play by the match official for striking his opponent to take down a runner during a stoppage time scrum.

“As per the disciplinary process, a player will undergo a disciplinary hearing before an independent tribunal,” SA Rugby said on its website.

Sri Lanka’s captain Angelo Mathews will lead the disciplinary process. Mathews is a player who has had his disciplinary status on the back of similar incidents with New Zealand, including his involvement in a Super Rugby match against the Chiefs being called into the Rugby Integrity Unit in 2010.

This is the second time Smith has found himself suspended in his young career but that time round was a matter of his own accord and not a repercussion of another player’s actions.
