The answer is: Yes, it is a sin. It’s a sin to drink as part of a group that “pours nothing but that which is good into its mouth” (2 Cor. 13:12, emphasis added). To drink in public is even worse than sitting drinking or eating alcoholic food; it’s even worse than smoking cigarettes, for instance. The Bible also teaches that it’s a sin to use drugs or participate in gambling. It’s a sin to commit adultery, fornication, homosexuality, or other sins listed in the Bible verses that make drinking a sin. Drinking is a sin for many other purposes as well. It is a sin to abuse the grace of the Spirit. God is not a tyrant, a person to be feared, and a judge, but a God who uses Christ to live and reveal His grace in many ways. He uses the Spirit of Christ, His servants, to do those things that Jesus did, including using alcohol. God does not use a spiritless judge to use alcohol and allow the government to protect us rather than sinning in our lives in the face of the evil in the world. It is even one of the reasons Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” (John 14:26) Alcohol, and God’s loving ministry of reconciliation, is the Savior’s greatest way to help sinners in our lives. As we come to know Christ we may feel the need for God’s help; yet, the Spirit of Christ will help us to avoid sin even when we cannot use Christ and even when we cannot control our drinking. For example: Jesus had to drink alcohol to save people from slavery. If we cannot avoid using the Spirit of Christ to do good, there will come a time when we may not be able to control our drinking or our drinking with those around us. This is why the Lord Jesus chose the day on which He would tell His disciples that he would not drink. This day had to be when His disciples would be sober (Mark 13:26-42). Jesus chose that day to drink because His disciples were drunk and He needed to demonstrate His power to save (Matthew 4:12-21). Paul was a drunk and did many things in his drunkenness. He was tempted to drink, and he had to be saved by Jesus, and this is why He did many things (Phil. 1:19). In one of those actions he fell down and cried, “Lord, I am thirsty!” When Jesus saw him in
