ROME (Reuters) – The leaders of the leading pro-European parties, Italy’s prime minister Matteo Renzi and his EU partners, were due to hold a summit on Saturday in a bid to convince their people to vote favourably for the European Union and, perhaps, for the new centrist alliance against the populist Five Star Movement.

Renzi, leader of leader of the anti-euro 4 Star movement, Italy’s fifth-place in opinion polls, and British Prime Minister Theresa May are due at a Rome hotel where the EU leaders will hold separate talks on European future ahead of a summit in Brussels on Tuesday.
The Five Star Movement, founded by Grillo, is polling at around 3-4 percent in the opinion polls, around the same level as Italy’s right-wing Northern League party. The movement does not yet have a formal manifesto but seems to agree with some of Renzi’s policy positions, notably a pledge to curb immigration and improve the country’s tax climate.
May is due to hold talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Tied at 5-5 in a Bloomberg Politics poll on Friday, Italy’s centre-left prime minister is leading five other EU leaders in preference to Grillo in a three-way race to be head of state. Renzi has led opinion polls in polls for several months.
