How do you define Healthy weight?
People have different body weights regardless of their size. You could be a very thin person who is not obese as long as you are not overweight. If you are eating enough calories, you are still healthy. That’s why the goal of “healthy weight” is to lose as much weight as possible without gaining too much weight.
People are generally healthy when their weight is around the optimal range for their height. In other words, if they aren’t over or underweight it means they are between that and the Healthy Weight range.
The Ideal BMI is often between 18.5 and 24.9. For example, a person of average height is probably healthy weight: BMI of 18.5, meaning that their BMI is close to the healthy range but their heart weight exceeds the healthy range. A person of normal weight is usually at most healthy weight. These people typically have a BMI between 18 and 24.5.
You often hear that people with lower BMI are at higher risk for obesity. While this is true for some people, it doesn’t mean that high BMI is more dangerous for everyone.
If you have been told your BMI is lower than 18.5, it’s not because of a healthy diet or exercise. It means that you are over or underweight and it has something to do with genetics – both you and your parent. Genetic factors are linked with weight gain and obesity. Your genetic makeup affects your health even in childhood.
In general, if you weigh less than 150 pounds then you are healthy weight in the Healthy Weight range and if you weigh 250 pounds or more, or obese, you are considered obese in the Healthy Weight range. An overweight person with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes are much more likely to be unhealthy weight than overweight people with normal blood pressure, normal cholesterol, or normal diabetes. People with type 2 diabetes are usually overweight, even if they have normal blood pressure, normal cholesterol, and normal diabetes.
How do I determine my BMI?
The standard for calculating your BMI is to use a BMI which is based on your height and weighs you. As an example, you may wear a size 14 dress for male or a size 8 for female and weigh 120 pounds. For someone of average height and weight you would use this ratio:
14/12 = 60% normal weight
22/8 = 25% overweight
32/16 = 5% obese
