I do all of the research out there and I think that the best diet for losing fat is very simple: Eat less, exercise more.

I’m a huge proponent that you can be lean, fat-free, and in perfect shape when you go out for a meal and you just don’t eat. That’s the goal. You don’t eat. Then come back and eat. If you’re not into that, then I would suggest that you look at the science of it. But don’t eat everything that you see on TV. That’s not what the scientific evidence shows. You can do that. If people are watching you eat, a large part of your diet should come from whole food sources and lean protein, high-fat dairy, and fiber. All of those things have been proven to create the kind of benefits that people want. If that’s all you see on TV, you end up eating like that.

In The New York Times, you said that all you need to eat is lean meat and vegetables and no grains. I had a hard time with that, but that’s what I’ve been doing for years. If a lot of people eat like that, most are going to wind up with a lot of water in their system and not gaining any weight. Not everyone can do that.

But there are plenty of foods that we have in the U.S. that are high in fiber and low carb—you can find them at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods and then you can cook them up. The problem is in the U.S., you end up eating something like a ton of these processed foods, with all the extra sugar that comes along with them. You actually end up doing a lot of the stuff that your body doesn’t want.

How can we keep food simple?

We should always start with vegetables. One of the things that people don’t realize is that the majority of food that you eat for the first 50 days of a new diet is the plant vegetables. People tend to think that you eat the animal meats and the cheese and the bread and all that stuff and then you add all the junk food and the processed fast food. We’ve got to start there. We should start with the food. Then we should add in the stuff that keeps you healthy. Then we should add all the stuff that doesn’t do anything except make you feel crappy. But if you add healthy stuff together, you’re going to be fine.
