A film editor’s salary ranges based on different job titles and responsibilities.
Salaries range from $14,000 to upwards of $55,000 per year for the best film editors, according to the Motion Picture Editors Guild (MPEG). The average is currently $49,000 per year.
Job titles that mean a little more in Hollywood include:
Director of photography
Assistant visual effects supervisor
Production assistant
Colorist
Special-effects coordinator
Post-production supervisor
Sound editor / compositor
Editors employ their craft to bring each individual film shot to life. Often, they’ll focus on color, compositing or sound editing, according to the MPEG.
On the other hand, a cinematographer might work on a character-driven documentary, while a voice over artist may take care of sound and voiceovers.

Editors at the Hollywood Film School
You might love film editing if you’ve already done some other jobs, but if you have no experience, you can get a job at the Hollywood Film School — a program designed to train young and aspiring filmmakers for their first jobs.
Here your film-editing classes are tailored to your personality and interests. For example, if you’re looking for an editing job as a writer, you could enroll on writing classes while in college or the summer before graduating.
The program also covers other types of production work as well.
“You can go on any class, even those in film and video production,” said Sarah Clements, the program’s program coordinator. “It’s flexible and the courses are relevant.”
The Film Education and Training office at USC is also offering the program to anyone interested in gaining skills of the editing arts. You can apply for the credits by emailing an application to filmeducation@usc.edu by January.
