It’s not possible to discover all the facts about flapper dress at one go.
There is no written definition of flapper dress, nor even an established style of flapper dress.
But there is some evidence that this dress style had been around as long as you could find flaxen hair and the beginnings of the flapper movement have been reported in ancient texts.
Here are some of the things you can learn about this dress from the writings about it, and also from the earliest examples of the dress style:
Flapper dress was originally a symbol of elegance.
The style was a mix of a ruffled tulle skirt and a loose white or linen kimono.
The wearer appeared to be wearing the dress with an open-fronted dress belt.
The design was often embellished with a variety of flowers, often in the form of a wreath or bunting.
This style is believed to have started in the early 20th century with some type of revival movement in France.
Some of the most famous flapper dresses are created by the fashion designer Anna Balay, who started flapper wear at the age of 18. The styles became so popular that she created her own clothing line and made it available to the public.
As you can see, this style is very similar to today’s flapper dress.
Formal dress (boots and coat)
This is an important part of the flapper look. However, it did not start in the 19th century, and you can’t learn much about the origins of formal dress, or its evolution from the 17th to 19th, from the pictures of women in formal dress.
The first reference is found in an 1850 report by the British Library suggesting that the dress worn by women who work in the railway network in the British Isles did not come from the European countries.

This suggests that it evolved independently across British Isles at an earlier stage.
The origins of the name formal dress can be traced to a book, written by the French novelist Anne Duras in 1783, titled, Les Flâneurs Récit. The book described this dress style as being introduced in France in the 18th century by a woman travelling as a flapper and was worn by the upper classes of Paris during the 18th and 19th centuries.
