There are many different types of alkaline such as Lithium, Lithium-Ion, NiCd & AAA. However, this article will concentrate on the following types: Li-ion, Li-Alkaline and Li-phosphate.
What Is an Alkaline Battery?
An alkaline battery is an ionic compound (an ion) with very low electrical conductivity which has low resistance. This property makes it suitable for carrying energy in a current (such as charging), storage or as a battery in a battery charger.
This principle can be found in most of the ionic compounds used in batteries and is known as the Law of the Inductive Equilibrium.
The main advantage of an ionic compound such as an alkaline battery is the lower cost as it is much cheaper than alternative forms of energy, such as electrical energy, fossil fuels, nuclear energy, hydrogen, etc.
An ionic compound such as an alkaline battery has the following properties:
Low resistance – This property can be defined as the low resistance of a battery when an applied current is being divided into small number of small currents.
Stabilizing effect – This is described as the tendency of the battery to be used a lot in a low power application.
Long time life – Many alkaline batteries also exhibit low resistance, so it is possible to charge/discharge them a long time. However, the batteries may not have the necessary stability.
Can I use an alkaline battery in a rechargeable battery?
An alkaline battery is not a good storage form for rechargeable batteries. The alkaline batteries have lower capacity (than rechargeable batteries) and they contain small amounts of electrolyte. For example, you can find a 50 Watt rechargeable battery that is capable of storing 500 kWh but it requires 18-18.5 mA in DC current.
