A 1000 word article may be free or may be paid for, although the latter is usually paid by the publisher. I prefer a free article, but pay for something when the article is of sufficient length to help justify the fee (usually 5,000-100,000 words). I try to work out the cost of writing a long story and include that in the price.
Should I use the word count in the footer?
Yes, if you provide a page count, and I’m publishing on a site to pay for publishing fees. In fact, that’s how we’ve started. I’ll often use the page count to help me justify the cost of publishing, and will not list the word count in the footer. For example, there’s a piece that’s about what it means to have a disability in the footer – which I think many others would do, although I could also list the word count.
Are you trying to raise awareness of disability in fiction?
Yes. I’m an advocate of disability equality and the issues involved in disability fiction are some of the most pressing issues our generation face. I believe that disability fiction has the power to change how society perceives and works with people with disabilities. We don’t see the same kind of people on screen as other people do with disabilities, and I want to see more disabilities portrayed in fiction.
Who should I interview?
I’ve tried to interview people of all stripes and not just writers. I interviewed a number of people before I settled on working with JK Rowling – but I don’t just want to work with the best. So a lot of my interviews are made up of people at different stages in their career, so there’s no preconceived idea of what they are capable of. What I’ve discovered is that I need to interview people like them. That’s not to say they must be able to do it, it just means they can speak about disability in a way that is appealing to the kind of audience that I’m aiming for.
Is there anything that you miss when working exclusively with a male editor or writer?
No, there is no one thing I miss. Writing a piece at any cost is the only way to get it published, and that makes working with a male editor even harder. I don’t make excuses for that, though. I’m happy to work with anyone, regardless of gender, and it doesn’t matter whether they like a lot of what they’re doing.
