(sigh) Yes. I was going to start when I was six and then stop when I was 12. A whole lot of teachers said I shouldn’t. “You’re only a child, you shouldn’t be studying.” Well, I was at school for two hours a day, and I was a lot better. It’s not because I wanted to study. It’s just that I had to stop because I was so hungry.
It was a very difficult time in my life and I ended it at 16 with an interview in London. It came down to the best school for piano and it just was. I think now I’m really happy with what I did at school and I’m not taking anything for granted. I have my good days and my bad days and sometimes I’m just not ready for that.
Is it easier for me now to read music now than it used to be? I think it’s easier now than it ever was when I first started. I have my technique down pretty good and my music is more interesting and more dynamic. I’m no longer just working on the piano but I am learning the drums and also the percussion. I have a good technique and now I’m able to use all of that to the best of my ability.
I don’t like doing interviews because when you’re in it you’re not thinking. It’s the interviewer’s job to make you think. I don’t like doing interviews because I know I’m not going to get any positive answers out of them. The only possible result is I’m getting the same questions over and over again. It’s just too much work for me.
Have you started playing any music again after all these years? There have been a couple of things. I played some guitar for about 12 months but not anymore. It was not fun to do. I feel like if I’m playing anything at all, it’s just an exercise in getting better at what I do best.
Have you ever written a piece of music, or come up with any new compositions? I still don’t know how to write. I feel like all of my ideas come from somewhere else. I think that might be a good thing. It will help with the writing process. I’ve already started working on a new song and I’ve got a few instruments to play but I haven’t written any new things.
