The only way to make a dummy is to go out to the woods and hunt around with a knife and a sharpener. This is to get a good feel for your equipment. You might find that if you start to use a blade tool, it will really become a tool, and you will know what you want to do with it. One thing to keep in mind is this: When you hunt, you usually need to be near trees, or you have to be close, because many deer will fall off the trees. When you do that, you need to keep a good grip on the tree limb that you’re holding. It just makes sense.
When you’re finished, you’ve got a good, sharp, working knife. If you had a piece of wood that you were using as a “dummy”, you’d be able to use that as a sharpener.
Are there any other things to watch out for with a knife?
There aren’t many things to watch out for with a knife. The handle is really the main thing that you need to watch out for. If you have a knife that has a very rough handle, or if it bends really badly, you need to be very careful. I don’t even bother cutting up a handle with a knife, unless I get a real handle with a nice, solid-looking handle.
Another thing to think about is the blade. With a knife, if you cut the handle badly, the blade will stop working. With a short handle, the blade can sometimes get stuck in your side and not come back again. A better way to use a knife is to use the tip of the blade to cut the wood. This keeps the blade really sharp, since if you don’t cut it, it won’t get re-sharpened.
