A lot of people think it takes 10 years. Actually, I can tell you from experience that it takes a decade or more. People think I’m kidding around, but not true. The process is the same—a process in which you work very closely with the ventriloquist and learn their tricks, and then, of course, come up with your own, and that’s what you do in your spare time. So it takes a long time, and the average person is not up to it. You have to be at least 12. And it’s something that you need to develop in order to do a lot of the little things that they do, like the way they say their first word. You need to be good at making it sound natural. Then, after a year or two of training, you get the opportunity to do a little bit. If you haven’t gotten that time, there’s a big chance that you may not do it again.
What types of things are people up to? Some do all sorts of things, for instance, there are ventriloquist dummy performers who play in bars, and there are some who perform for clowns and entertainers.
Some do all sorts of shows. Some do this one and then the other, and that goes for most people. A couple of months ago, we did a show on Monday in the parking lot of the library, right under the statue of Mother Theresa [for the Italian national Day] and also for the Spanish national day. It’s an event for the local community that we’ve organized: Kids got to take turns playing a card game—the card game, of course, is “D’Arco”—and with each play, we show videos of different people—friends who work for us, people who like working out, people who like being in a group, and a few different types of people—who will be performing. It was a really great event for the people who work at the library; a lot of people that work there are really active. When a lot of those people come to practice, it’s a really fun experience. A lot of them stay at the library for a few hours.
How do you keep kids from leaving for work like that?
I don’t know if it’s kids that stay in there, I can’t figure out what’s keeping them there. It’s the library staff that do that. Many of those kids—not every kid—will come back. A lot
