The Federal Trade Commission yesterday announced it found two major cable-TV companies liable for engaging in deceptive advertising against consumer TV programming — including the hit comedy “Seinfeld.” Both networks were forced to pay $2 million to resolve allegations that they had used a type of TV trademark not allowed by law to falsely represent the content of individual sitcom episodes in the cable programming they sold.

“Although cable TV has been around for more than 30 years in the United States, this latest settlement reflects a major shift in the media industry,” said FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz. “The FTC takes allegations concerning deceptive conduct seriously and is committed to ensuring consumers enjoy an accurate view of what is on their programming and how that programming is presented.”
