How do beginners learn to paint? – Free Online Art Lessons

How do artists teach? How do they maintain their skill?

The answer is: they don’t. Most beginners, when they first start painting, learn by watching how someone on this page paints. Most professionals are very good at painting because they have seen something that they like, but they don’t know how to do it themselves. It’s the same with painting: when you don’t know how to do something, it’s easy to do it well enough.

The other thing about beginner painting – if you take a painting workshop or you have an artist to help you – it’s pretty much 100% sure that there’s somebody already better than you at doing it.

It’s important to be able to look at something you love and know immediately that you can replicate it better than someone out there. So, if you are at least fairly experienced at painting something that really bothers you, it’s OK to start out with something at least good enough. You might eventually find an artist who is better at painting than you. It won’t happen that much, and you shouldn’t be putting too much effort into it to start.

If you are at all curious about something in art, take a class. In a class, even if you don’t know a great artist by name, you’ll probably find someone who is teaching it. If you have absolutely nothing to learn, take a look at several free classes offered at colleges and universities. You’ll probably find someone who can help teach a class to you. You’ll still learn a lot in that way, but it’s much less likely that you will have a terrible painter on your hands.
