Maine’s Senate races are now too close to call, but Maine could join the list of states where the national political media and their favorite GOP candidates are already trying to sway public opinion before election day by spending millions of dollars in ads, radio and television ads targeting Democratic U.S. senators.
The national media and their favorite Republican candidates are already trying to tilt public opinion before election day by spending millions of dollars in ads, radio and television ads targeting Democratic U.S. senators — including Maine’s, which, unlike most states, doesn’t allow candidates to run more than 3 percent in their party’s primary elections.
After the 2012 election, President Obama was quick to criticize GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his campaign for spending too much money in the state.
“If the governor is so concerned about that, he should start spending and start spending like a good neighbor who doesn’t want anyone on their lawn,” Obama told reporters in the aftermath of the $400 million ad blitz by the Romney camp.
A total of $1 million has been spent by outside groups on U.S. Senate and gubernatorial races from May 2015 through January this year to date, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
The national media and their favorites — including House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Cory Gardner and U.S. Senate candidate Angus King — have spent more than $3.3 million combined on television and radio advertisements attacking vulnerable Democratic senators, according to the CRP analysis. The top ten recipients of campaign cash from the national media and their favorite GOP candidates this year include Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, U.S. Sen. Mark Udall, Maine’s Maggie Hassan, Sen. Mary Landrieu, New York’s Kirsten Gillibrand, Sen. Rob Portman, Sen. Ted Ayotte, Minnesota Democrat Al Franken and Nebraska Republican Chuck E. Grassley.
