The new year has arrived and the time of year when a group of the world’s most powerful people gather to discuss the most pressing issues and the most urgent future developments that require the coordination of their energy and information resources, is long overdue.
A year ago the world woke up to the dangers that climate change posed to all humanity.
More than a dozen nations announced plans to fight climate change in the lead up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris later this year, and the United Nations announced the creation of the ‘Committee on the Environment,’ with the goal of creating agreements that would make it impossible for global warming to take place.
While this is all great news, it’s far from enough. As is well documented, global greenhouse gas emissions are about to skyrocket to another record high level, and the world’s poor will be the hardest hit. As a result, the world is looking at an even greater threat of an unstable environment and a loss of food, water, and health.
At the core of this problem is the need for a truly global effort. As of this writing, more than half a million people have committed to make one big change to reduce their environmental impact (here’s another infographic about what they can do).
And there’s still a lot that government and international institutions can do to help make that happen. But while there are so many options for effective solutions, we decided to highlight a few of the most efficient ones. Here follows a run and gun overview of some of the best ideas the world has available to address the environmental threat of the present, and a sneak peak at some of the things we’re currently thinking about that could help us take a greater leap towards a sustainable future.

Carbon in the atmosphere isn’t just coming out of the ground for no reason. It’s generated by all kinds of things, including the world’s largest industrial processes, power plants, and industrial processes, as well as agricultural processes. One big source of CO2 emissions is driving cars and trucks. Just by moving people or goods, automobiles are the worst offenders, emitting about 20 years’ worth of CO2 emissions. But for a world full of millions of poor people, not only are they not getting to have the things they enjoy, but
