PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A Pennsylvania judge has ruled a man must pay former Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Mike Tomlin more than $1.8 million for the player’s wrongful termination.
Judge Judith J. Mahoney on Friday awarded $600,000 in punitive damages to former Steelers linebacker James Farrior.
The case against Farrior was settled in November 2011.
In the end, the NFL and the Steelers agreed to pay Farrior $500,000. However, the terms of the settlement required the Steelers to pay Farrior an additional $1.8 million, just before the conclusion of the case.
On Friday, Judge Mahoney said the Steelers were obligated to pay Farrior that amount.
“To pay Mr. Farrior for the wrongful termination of his employment is for the parties to do or not to do as they please,” the judge wrote. “In this case, Judge Alana L. Cote of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania ordered the Steelers to pay James Farrior the $500,000 sum. The parties have settled the case. But in order to make a settlement, (the parties) must pay, by the amount of $500,000, James Farrior his actual damages and his punitive damages.”
Farrior sued Tomlin in 2011 for the wrongful discharge and loss of his job and was awarded half of damages ($325,000), according to court documents.
The Steelers had agreed to the settlement before the final ruling in the case was rendered and had until Dec. 30 to appeal the ruling.
