The former leader of the U.S. Air Force’s top special operations units called for a “re-imagining” of the Navy SEALs in a talk at the Aspen Security Forum on Thursday.
Retired SEAL Team 6 leader Lt. Cmdr. William “Ryan” Owens was the keynote speaker at the annual Aspen forum for the military and defense industry. He told his audience that the SEALs have made a huge improvement to their operations in recent years, with more money, training and a greater awareness of counterterrorism threats.
Owens compared the work of a SEAL with that of an American soldier and said that to keep up with the threat, the force needs to reevaluate its strategy. The SEALs have become very “mobile” in recent years and he warned that it was time to retool the entire military.

“It’s time our Army and Navy realized that we need to re-evaluate the entire force of the US Navy and this is a very bad situation,” Owens said.
Owens referred to the U.S. Navy SEALs as “a small force” when compared to the U.S. Army’s elite combat and Ranger units. The former SEAL commander described the lack of professionalism by his former comrades who have a tendency to “drift around” the chain of command, which he said is a huge problem for SEAL operators.
“In the last 12 years we’ve lost many, many good guys…They’re still there,” he said.
The former SEAL commander said that it would be tough for the military to keep up with the terrorism threat, and called upon the “allies” to re-evaluate their “capabilities” to deal with it.
