There has been a great deal of debate over recent weeks about the extent to which Germany’s National Library has been infiltrated by foreign intelligence and with particular attention paid to the activities of former East Germany which continued well into its transition to democracy in 1999. GDR archives, you’re saying, were infiltrated by the Soviet Union as long as the GDR has existed?
There have always been some Russian influences and some Eastern German historians have been able to show that this was going on until the late 1990s. Nowadays, however, Russian influence is pretty much gone, so they’ve pretty much been swept away.
Was the collection a part of that Soviet-directed effort to get into the heart of the Western world?
The National Library didn’t get into the European continent for the purposes of Russian propaganda, but it did go through Eastern Europe. It also had a part in the KGB’s espionage operations in the West. The collection was there for research purposes and some of its contents were used to try to learn from these archives or to give them a greater importance. But it has never been used for foreign intelligence.
