A new survey released by the Pew Research Center on Oct. 14 suggests that the Republican Party’s support of a pathway for citizens to obtain legal status to remain in the United States has dropped precipitously over the past 8 years.
By a nearly 4-to-1 margin (58 to 31 percent) the American public now supports a route to citizenship for those eligible to remain in the country – down from 79 percent in 2009 – while 56 percent support granting legal status only for those who “have lived here for at least five years.”
By comparison, support for a pathway to citizenship is slightly higher among Democrats (67 percent), those with college degrees (70 percent) and those age 65 and older (67 percent).
The poll of 546 adults also noted that the number of people who are undocumented – undocumented and legal – grew by about 6 million from 2001 to 2013 while the number of people who are not undocumented grew by about 4 million (with just 8 percent of the total population still being undocumented).
The decline in support for immigrants’ legal status also stands in contrast to what one might expect given that the GOP’s own poll in the early part of its mandate had found the party supported legal status for those eligible to stay in the U.S.
A number of national polls have found that the U.S. public has become more accepting in recent years of unauthorized immigrants, including a Pew Research Center poll last December finding that 57 percent favored giving legal status to those eligible to stay. And although the number of undocumented immigrants increased between 2001 and 2013, most of the national polls also find that the share of the U.S. population that is undocumented has been steadily declining during that same time period.
Pew Research Center pollster J. Ann Selzer said the declining support for granting citizenship “can possibly be explained by two factors: the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling, and the fact that younger Hispanic and Latino voters are the fastest growing demographic group in the United States.”
