The New York Islanders have signed forward Brock Nelson to a two-year contract extension, the team announced Friday. This will be Nelson’s second pro contract.
Nelson, 23, was acquired in December’s trade that sent Anthony Beauvillier, Matt Martin and Jaro Halak to the New Jersey Devils, along with the team’s fourth round draft pick. Last season, he scored 15 goals and 36 points in 56 games.
Nelson played 51 games with Albany (AHL), tallying three goals, 17 points and plus-12 rating.
Following a solid rookie season in New York in 2013-14 that was cut short by a shoulder injury in the third game of the 2013-14 season, Nelson played in 66 games the following season and had a goal and five assists.
In the two years since New York acquired both Halak and Beauvillier, the Islanders have lost two top-six forwards, a top-six defenseman and a backup goaltender.
In addition to Nelson, The Islanders have added forward Thomas Hickey, center John Tavares, defenseman Matt Donovan and goaltender Thomas Greiss.
