How do you move your shoulders? How can you manage all of these different types of motion?

This is one of the reasons I created the Valsalva maneuver. Valsalva is a forward bend and your arms rotate into your side-by-side position and the hip and forearm bend to create a V-shaped curve.

You then do a Valsalva movement at the same time. This is very powerful because the arms and body rotate back into the side-by-side position like a V-shaped curve.

Why Does It Work?

In most cases, I see people struggle to stay locked in with their hips at the same time they keep their arms extended. This is a good case for Valsalva!

Imagine being a roller coaster. You have two opposing forces. One that pushes you down to the bottom of the tracks. The other forces you up to the top. You can’t move one without the other unless you can rotate your hips into each new position.

Valsalva is a great way to maintain balance and control your hips during an upward rotation while simultaneously using the V-shaped hips to allow your arms to keep pushing you up the tracks.

What Can You Get Out Of Valsalva?

Valsalva may not be the best maneuver to accomplish. To me, the best thing you can do is find stability in the hip-opening position and continue to flex your hips. This should create the flexibility to move your hips into the V-shape and still achieve a strong starting point.

One of my clients, Tom P. who has struggled to control his pelvis and hip mobility all of this while working in the NBA, has found the Valsalva maneuver in isolation provides stability for his hip-opening mobility.

He’s found that he can keep his pelvis locked in and stabilize it while simultaneously using the Valsalva maneuver as a starting point when trying to keep his hips balanced so he can control the movements his body makes while running with his arms extended in V as he twists his body while rotating his hips into a V-shape.

That is the magic of Valsalva.
