President Obama announced late last week that he has ordered the closure of the prison in the southern region of Guantánamo Bay. The decision is expected to come into effect in July. In his announcement, Obama said the prison was no longer needed.
PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: It is time for us to end this practice, which has been around for more than half a century and which I have repeatedly made clear is counterproductive to our security—and to our values. Closing the detention facility in Cuba, despite all the challenges it represents domestically and internationally, will ensure our most closely guarded secrets will no longer be compromised by foreign entities or others.
AMY GOODMAN: We are living at the heart of one of today’s most heated constitutional controversies in relation to prisons. Earlier in the week, President Barack Obama, in the Rose Garden, announced he would order a report to be filed on conditions in Guantánamo Bay. On Saturday in his State of the Union address, he reiterated his decision to continue the policy.
PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: When we close these prisons, we are leaving our people behind. At the very least, we will leave American taxpayers footing the bill for hundreds of millions of dollars in repairs that are going to be needed.
